Hereditary Sensory and Autonomic Neuropathy SCN9A-related · Congenital Insensitivity to Pain · SCN9A-related HSAN · Sensory and Autonomic Neuropathy · Congenital Pain Insensitivity · Neuropathy, hereditary sensory and autonomic, SCN9A-related
This is a severe, inherited nervous system disorder caused by a genetic mutation in the SCN9A gene. It disrupts the normal function of sensory nerves, which are the pathways responsible for transmitting signals like pain and temperature to the brain. Without these signals, affected dogs cannot feel pain or heat, leaving them unable to protect themselves from injury.
Symptoms typically appear during puppyhood. Owners will notice that the puppy does not react to painful stimuli, which often leads to excessive licking, chewing, and severe self-mutilation of their own paws and limbs.
There is no cure for this condition, and management focuses on lifelong wound care and preventing self-injury. Managing these injuries and protecting the dog's limbs typically costs between 1,500 and 6,000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
