Hypertrophic neuropathy, also known as Canine Inherited Demyelinative Neuropathy (CIDN), is an inherited disorder of the peripheral nervous system. In affected dogs, the protective myelin sheath surrounding the nerves abnormally thickens, which disrupts the electrical signals traveling between the brain and the muscles. This disruption leads to progressive weakness and muscle wasting.
Symptoms typically appear in puppies between 7 and 10 weeks of age. Owners will first notice an unsteady, wobbly gait and weakness in the hind legs, which quickly progresses to severe muscle loss and an inability to stand.
There is no cure for this progressive condition, and veterinary care is focused on diagnostics and supportive care, typically costing between 500 and 2000 EUR. Because the disease is severe and rapidly worsens, humane euthanasia is often recommended to prevent suffering.
