Sensorische ataktische Neuropathie · Mitochondriale Myopathie und sensorische Ataxie · Maternally Inherited Sensory Ataxic Neuropathy · Neuropathy, sensory ataxic
This is an inherited nervous system disorder caused by a defect in the mitochondria, which are the energy-producing parts of cells. This defect leads to progressive damage of the sensory nerves, meaning the dog's brain cannot properly process where its limbs are positioned in space.
Owners typically notice symptoms between 2 and 8 months of age, starting with an uncoordinated, staggering walk and general clumsiness. Affected dogs have trouble with balance and limb placement but typically do not show signs of physical pain.
There is no cure for this progressive condition, so management focuses on lifelong supportive care, including physiotherapy and home modifications. Managing this disease over a dog's lifetime typically costs between 1,500 and 6,000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
