Leonberger Polyneuropathy 1 (LPN1) is an inherited neurological disorder that causes progressive damage to the peripheral nerves, which are the nerves connecting the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. This damage disrupts the electrical signals traveling between the brain and the muscles, leading to muscle weakness and coordination issues.
Symptoms typically appear between 1 and 3 years of age, starting with an unsteady gait, stumbling, and weakness in the hind legs. Affected dogs may also develop harsh breathing sounds or difficulty breathing due to paralysis of the vocal cords.
There is no cure for this progressive condition, meaning treatment is limited to lifelong supportive care and physical therapy to maintain mobility. Managing this disease typically costs between €1,500 and €5,000 over the dog's lifetime.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
