This is a severe, inherited neurological disease affecting the peripheral nervous system, which controls movement and breathing. It is caused by a genetic mutation in the RAB3GAP1 gene that disrupts normal nerve function and communication. Over time, this disruption leads to progressive damage to the nerves throughout the body.
Symptoms typically begin between 3 and 6 months of age, starting with hoarseness, swallowing difficulties, and breathing problems caused by paralysis of the voice box. As the disease progresses, owners will notice worsening muscle weakness and paralysis in the limbs.
There is no cure for this progressive condition, and treatment is limited to supportive care to keep the dog comfortable. Because of the severity of the symptoms, euthanasia is often necessary within the first year of life, with palliative care and diagnostic costs typically ranging from 500 to 2,000 EUR.
