Spinocerebellar ataxia with seizures · Ataxie mit Kopftitubation und Krampfanfällen · Progressive cerebellar ataxia with head tremor and seizures · Ataxia, progressive, with head tremor and seizures
This is a severe, progressive disorder of the nervous system characterized by the premature death of nerve cells in the brain, particularly within the cerebellum, which controls balance and movement. The disease is associated with unusual microscopic structures, called inclusions, that build up inside these nerve cells. This cellular damage leads to a gradual loss of physical coordination and body control.
Owners typically first notice an unsteady, swaying walk (ataxia) and involuntary head tremors during puppyhood or adolescence. Over time, these coordination issues worsen, and the dog may begin having uncontrollable seizures.
There is no cure for this progressive condition, but supportive care and seizure medications can help manage symptoms temporarily. Lifelong management and diagnostic monitoring typically cost between €1,000 and €3,500.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
