Progressive Retinal Atrophy 2 (PRA2) is an inherited eye disorder that affects the retina, which is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. In affected dogs, the specialized cells that detect light, known as photoreceptors, gradually degenerate and die. This progressive loss of cells eventually leads to complete blindness.
Symptoms usually begin around 4 to 5 years of age, starting with night blindness where the dog hesitates in the dark. As the disease progresses, daytime vision also deteriorates until the dog becomes completely blind.
There is no cure for this condition, and it inevitably leads to blindness. Lifetime management, including regular veterinary ophthalmologist visits and supportive care, typically costs between 500 and 2000 EUR.
