Progressive Retinal Atrophy HIVEP3 · PRA-HIVEP3 · HIVEP3-PRA · HIVEP3 progressive retinal atrophy · Progressive retinal atrophy B HIVEP3
This is an inherited eye disease that affects the retina, which is the light-sensitive tissue layer at the back of the eye. Over time, the cells in this layer degenerate and die, preventing the eye from sending visual signals to the brain. This progressive loss of function ultimately leads to complete blindness.
Owners typically first notice signs of night blindness, such as hesitation in the dark, during early to middle adulthood. As the disease progresses, daytime vision also deteriorates until the dog loses its sight entirely.
There is no cure for this condition, but it is painless for the dog. Management focuses on supportive care and environmental adjustments to help the dog adapt to blindness, with lifetime costs for diagnosis and support typically ranging from 500 to 2000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
