This is an inherited eye disorder where the retina, which is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye, slowly degenerates due to a genetic mutation in the MERTK gene. This defect prevents the photoreceptor cells—the specialized cells that detect light—from recycling waste products properly, causing them to gradually die off. Over time, this progressive loss of cells leads to complete blindness.
Owners typically first notice night blindness, where the dog hesitates or bumps into objects in dim light, usually starting in young to middle-aged dogs. Over time, this progresses to a noticeable loss of vision during the day.
There is no cure for this progressive condition, so management focuses on supportive care and adapting the home environment. Lifelong costs for veterinary monitoring and supportive supplements generally range from 500 to 2000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
