This genetic eye condition, also known as PRA5 or PRA-N, causes the light-sensitive cells of the retina at the back of the eye to slowly degenerate. Because of a defect in the NECAP1 gene, these cells cannot function properly and eventually die off. This gradual loss of retinal tissue leads to progressive and permanent blindness.
Owners typically first notice night blindness in early adulthood, where the dog becomes hesitant or clumsy in low-light conditions. Over time, this vision loss progresses during daylight hours, eventually leading to complete blindness.
There is no cure to reverse or stop this genetic degeneration. Management focuses on supportive care and regular veterinary ophthalmology check-ups to monitor eye health, with lifetime costs ranging from 500 to 2000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
