This is an inherited eye disease affecting the retina, which is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. In affected dogs, the photoreceptors—the specialized cells that detect light—develop abnormally during puppyhood and prematurely waste away. This progressive degeneration leads to a complete and permanent loss of vision.
Owners typically notice night blindness in affected puppies as early as six weeks of age, causing them to hesitate or bump into things in the dark. As the disease progresses, daytime vision also deteriorates, usually resulting in complete blindness by about one year of age.
There is no cure or treatment to stop this progressive blindness. Lifetime costs generally range from 250 to 1200 EUR, which primarily covers veterinary ophthalmologist consultations and supportive aids to help the blind dog navigate daily life safely.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
