Progressive Retinal Atrophy (rcd4) is an inherited eye disease that causes the gradual degeneration of the retina, which is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Over time, the specialized photoreceptor cells responsible for detecting light and color slowly die off. This progressive loss of cells eventually leads to complete blindness in both eyes.
Owners typically first notice signs of night blindness, such as bumping into objects or hesitancy in the dark, with symptoms usually appearing late in life between 7 and 10 years of age. As the condition progresses, daytime vision also slowly deteriorates until the dog loses its sight entirely.
There is no cure or treatment to reverse this condition, but the disease itself is painless. Lifetime management costs range from 300 to 1200 EUR, which primarily cover the initial veterinary ophthalmologist diagnosis and supportive care.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
