This is an inherited eye disease where the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye, gradually breaks down. It is caused by a genetic mutation in the SAG gene, which disrupts the normal function of proteins needed for vision. Over time, this defect leads to the progressive loss of the photoreceptor cells that detect light, eventually causing blindness.
Owners typically first notice night blindness, where the dog hesitates or bumps into objects in dim light, starting around five years of age. As the disease advances, daytime vision also deteriorates, eventually leading to complete blindness.
There is no cure for this condition, but it progresses painlessly. Lifetime management costs, including diagnostic exams by a veterinary ophthalmologist and supportive care, typically range from 500 to 2000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
