This is an inherited eye disease, also known as PRA B1, that affects Miniature Schnauzers. It causes the gradual breakdown of the retina, which is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye that sends visual signals to the brain. Over time, this progressive degeneration leads to complete vision loss.
Owners typically first notice night blindness, such as hesitating in dark rooms or bumping into objects at night, starting in early to middle adulthood. This slowly progresses to daytime vision loss and eventual blindness.
There is no cure for this condition, and the resulting blindness is permanent. Lifelong management focuses on regular veterinary eye exams to monitor for secondary complications like cataracts, costing between €500 and €2,500.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
