This is an inherited eye disease affecting the retina, which is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. A genetic defect in the calcium channels of the eye's photoreceptor cells prevents them from working correctly, causing them to slowly waste away. This progressive degeneration gradually destroys the cells responsible for both night and day vision.
Affected dogs typically show signs of night blindness in early adulthood, such as hesitating in the dark or bumping into furniture. Over time, this progresses to a loss of daytime vision and eventually leads to complete blindness.
While this genetic condition is currently incurable, it is entirely painless. Lifelong management involves regular veterinary eye exams and supportive care, with expected costs ranging from 500 to 2000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
