What it is
This is an inherited eye disease affecting the retina, which is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. It is caused by mutations in the FAM161A gene that lead to the gradual breakdown and death of the cells responsible for vision. This genetic condition encompasses both the PRA3 variant found in Tibetan Spaniels and Tibetan Terriers, and the PRA6 variant found in English Shepherds.
How it presents
Owners typically first notice night blindness, where the dog hesitates or bumps into objects in dim light, starting in early to middle adulthood. As the disease progresses, daytime vision also deteriorates, eventually leading to complete blindness.
Treatment
There is no cure for this condition, and the resulting vision loss is permanent. Supportive care, regular veterinary eye exams, and home safety adjustments are recommended, with lifetime management costs ranging from 500 to 2,500 EUR.
