This is an inherited eye disease where the light-sensitive cells in the retina, called rods and cones, slowly break down over time. The rods, which handle vision in dim light, degenerate first, followed by the cones, which are responsible for bright light and color vision. This gradual degeneration of the eye's sensory layer eventually leads to complete blindness.
Owners typically first notice night blindness or difficulty navigating in the dark during early adulthood. As the disease progresses, daytime vision also deteriorates, usually leading to total blindness by middle age.
There is currently no cure or treatment to stop this progressive vision loss. Veterinary costs generally range from 300 to 1500 EUR, which covers the initial specialist ophthalmology consultations, diagnostic testing, and supportive care to help the dog adapt.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
