Retinal atrophy - Rod-cone dysplasia, CRX related(CRX-RCD)
CRX-associated rod-cone dysplasia · CRX-PRA · Cone-rod dystrophy CRX-related · Autosomal dominant rod-cone dysplasia · CRX retinal degeneration
What it is
This is an inherited eye disease in cats where the photoreceptor cells (rods and cones) in the retina degenerate prematurely. The retina is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye, and this degeneration leads to a progressive and permanent loss of vision.
How it presents
Symptoms such as night blindness and disorientation typically become noticeable in early kittenhood. The disease progresses rapidly, usually resulting in complete blindness within the first few months of life.
Treatment
There is no cure or treatment available to stop the progression of this disease. Costs of 300 to 1200 EUR are primarily for veterinary ophthalmologist consultations to confirm the diagnosis and guide the owner on lifestyle adaptations.
