Retinal degeneration II(RD II)
Also known as: Retinale Degeneration Typ II · Progressive Retinal Atrophy Type II · Type II Retinal Degeneration
Overview
What it is
Retinal degeneration II is an inherited eye disorder where the light-sensitive cells in the retina, which is the layer at the back of the eye that processes images, gradually break down and die. This progressive deterioration prevents the eye from properly transmitting visual information to the brain, eventually resulting in irreversible blindness. Because there are currently no commercial genetic tests for this condition in dogs, it must be diagnosed through clinical eye examinations.
How it presents
Owners typically first notice night blindness, where the dog hesitates or bumps into objects in dim light, followed by a gradual loss of daytime vision. The age of onset can vary, but the vision loss is progressive and usually leads to complete blindness.
Treatment
There is no cure or treatment available to stop or slow the progression of this vision loss. Veterinary care focuses on clinical monitoring and helping the dog adapt to its blindness, with lifetime diagnostic and management costs typically ranging from 300 to 1500 EUR.
