Norrie Disease Protein-related retinal dysplasia · X-linked retinal dysplasia · NDP-RD · Norrie-Syndrom beim Hund · X-chromosomale Netzhautdysplasie
This is an inherited eye disorder where the retina—the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye—fails to develop properly due to a genetic mutation in the NDP gene. This malformation can lead to early detachment of the retina from the underlying tissue, which severely disrupts how visual signals are sent to the brain. Because the condition is X-linked, it primarily affects male dogs.
Symptoms are typically noticeable in puppies shortly after they first open their eyes, around two to three weeks of age. Owners may observe signs of severe vision loss or complete blindness, such as bumping into objects, hesitation in unfamiliar spaces, or a cloudy appearance inside the pupil.
There is no cure for this genetic condition, and the resulting blindness is lifelong. Veterinary care focuses on the initial diagnosis and monitoring for secondary issues like glaucoma, with expected lifetime costs ranging from 0 to 500 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
