Retinal dysplasia with persistent primary vitreous · Retinadysplasie und persistierender hyperplastischer primärer Glaskörper · PHPV with retinal dysplasia · Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous and retinal dysplasia
This is a congenital eye condition where the retina, which is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye, does not develop properly. At the same time, embryonic blood vessels in the vitreous, the clear gel filling the eye, fail to disappear before birth as they normally should. This combination of developmental errors leads to permanent structural malformations inside the eye.
Symptoms are usually noticeable in young puppies as they begin to move around, as the condition is present from birth. Owners may observe a cloudy appearance in the eye, unusual reflections, or hesitant behavior and bumping into objects due to poor vision or blindness.
The underlying malformation is incurable, so care focuses on managing secondary complications to maintain comfort. Lifelong monitoring by a veterinary ophthalmologist is typically required, with expected costs ranging from 500 to 2500 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
