This inherited condition affects both the skeletal system and the eyes due to abnormal tissue development. In the skeleton, it causes dwarfism with abnormally short limbs, while in the eyes, it leads to malformations of the retina, which is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. These retinal changes can eventually cause the retina to detach, leading to vision loss.
Owners will typically notice that affected puppies have abnormally short front legs starting in their first few weeks of life. As they grow, these dogs often develop painful joint problems and show signs of vision loss or complete blindness, usually within their first year.
There is no cure for this condition, so treatment focuses on lifelong management of joint pain and supporting the dog's mobility and vision loss. Lifetime veterinary care, pain medications, and supportive therapies typically cost between 1,500 and 6,000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
