Border Collie Sensory Neuropathy · Hereditary Sensory Neuropathy · SN-BC · RETREG1-related sensory neuropathy · FAM134B sensory neuropathy
Sensory neuropathy is an inherited neurological disorder where the sensory nerve cells, which transmit feelings of pain and touch to the brain, progressively break down. This degradation of the nervous system prevents the dog from properly feeling its own limbs. It is an autosomal-recessive condition, meaning a puppy must inherit the mutated gene from both parents to be affected.
Symptoms typically appear between 2 and 7 months of age, starting with coordination problems and a reduced sensitivity to pain. Owners will often notice the dog excessively licking, biting, or chewing at its own paws, which can lead to severe self-inflicted injuries.
There is no cure for this progressive condition, and treatment is limited to managing wounds and trying to prevent self-injury. Supportive care typically costs between 500 and 2500 EUR, though the severity of the self-mutilation often leads to early euthanasia.
