Spongiform encephalopathies are severe brain disorders caused by abnormal proteins called prions, which trigger progressive, sponge-like degeneration of the central nervous system. Dogs are naturally highly resistant to these diseases due to a specific, protective genetic structure in their prion proteins. Because this resistance is a species-wide trait, commercial genetic testing is not offered or needed for dogs.
If a dog were to develop this condition, symptoms would typically appear in middle to older age. Owners would notice progressive neurological signs, including a loss of coordination, tremors, behavioral changes, and dementia.
Prion diseases are currently incurable and fatal, meaning treatment is limited to palliative care to maintain comfort. Supportive care and end-of-life management typically cost between €500 and €2,500.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
