Spongy Degeneration with Cerebellar Ataxia 1 (Belgian Malinois)(SDCA1)
Spongiform degeneration with cerebellar ataxia 1 · Cerebellar ataxia Malinois type 1 · Spongiöse Degeneration mit zerebellarer Ataxie Typ 1 · KCNJ10-associated ataxia
What it is
Spongiöse Degeneration mit zerebellarer Ataxie 1 (SDCA1) is an inherited neurological disease that causes the brain tissue, particularly in the cerebellum, to break down and develop a spongy appearance. The cerebellum is the area of the brain responsible for coordinating voluntary movements and balance. As this tissue degenerates, the dog's nervous system loses the ability to properly control body movements.
How it presents
Symptoms typically appear in puppies between 4 and 8 weeks of age. Owners will notice a rapid onset of uncoordinated movements, severe balance issues, and muscle tremors.
Treatment
There is no cure for this progressive disease, and supportive care or diagnostic testing generally costs between 200 and 1000 EUR. Because of the severity and rapid progression of the condition, humane euthanasia is typically recommended shortly after diagnosis.
