What it is
Urolithiasis is the formation of mineral stones within the urinary tract, which includes the kidneys, bladder, and connecting tubes. These solid crystal clusters develop when minerals in the urine clump together instead of dissolving. Over time, these stones can irritate the sensitive lining of the urinary system or completely block the flow of urine.
How it presents
Owners may notice their dog straining to urinate, urinating more frequently in small amounts, or having blood in their urine. A complete blockage of the urinary tract is a life-threatening emergency where the dog is unable to pass any urine.
Treatment
Depending on the stone type, treatment can involve surgical removal or special diets, with costs typically ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 EUR. Many dogs require lifelong dietary management and regular veterinary monitoring to prevent the stones from recurring.
