Vestibular disease is a neurological disorder that affects the balance system, which is located in the inner ear and the brain. It disrupts the dog's sense of spatial orientation, causing a sudden and severe loss of balance similar to extreme vertigo in humans. While some specific genetic forms exist, this broad clinical syndrome most commonly occurs without a known cause.
Owners will typically notice a sudden onset of a head tilt, rapid involuntary eye movements, stumbling, and vomiting from motion sickness. This condition most commonly affects older dogs, which is why it is often referred to as 'old dog' vestibular disease.
Most cases are treatable with supportive care like anti-nausea medication and fluids, and many dogs recover on their own within a few weeks. If advanced imaging like an MRI is needed to rule out deeper issues, diagnostic and treatment costs typically range from 300 to 2,500 EUR.
