X-linked progressive retinal atrophy type 1 (XLPRA1) is an inherited eye disease that causes the gradual breakdown of the retina, which is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Because the genetic mutation is located on the X chromosome, male dogs are primarily affected and will experience progressive vision loss.
Owners usually first notice night blindness or difficulty navigating in low light when the dog is between 1 and 2 years of age. Over time, daytime vision also deteriorates, typically resulting in complete blindness by middle age.
There is no cure for this condition, meaning treatment is lifelong and focuses on supportive care and regular veterinary eye exams. The lifetime cost for monitoring and supportive care typically ranges from 500 to 2500 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
