X-linked Progressive Retinal Atrophy 2 · Progressive Retinal Atrophy X-linked 2 · X-gebundene progressive Retinaatrophie Typ 2 · RPGR-associated progressive retinal atrophy type 2 · Retinal atrophy, progressive, X-linked, type 2
What it is
This is an inherited eye disease affecting the retina, which is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Due to a genetic defect on the X-chromosome, the cells of the retina progressively degenerate and die. Because of this X-linked inheritance pattern, the condition almost exclusively affects male dogs.
How it presents
Owners may first notice signs of night blindness, such as hesitation or bumping into objects in dim light, starting as early as six weeks of age. The disease progresses rapidly, typically leading to complete blindness by one to two years of age.
Treatment
There is no cure or treatment to stop the progression of this disease. Veterinary care focuses on diagnostic testing and supporting the dog's transition to blindness, with lifetime management costs typically ranging from 500 to 1500 EUR.
