What it is
Cerebellar degeneration-myositis complex (CDMC) is an inherited genetic disorder that simultaneously affects the nervous system and the muscles. It causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the cerebellum, which is the part of the brain responsible for coordinating movement, alongside painful muscle inflammation known as myositis. This combination severely impairs both balance and muscle function.
How it presents
Symptoms typically begin to appear around ten weeks of age, starting with a stiff gait and general muscle weakness. Over time, owners will notice worsening coordination issues, difficulty standing, and signs of muscle discomfort.
Treatment
This condition is incurable and progressive, meaning treatment is limited to supportive care to keep the dog comfortable. Lifetime costs for diagnostics and palliative care generally range from 500 to 2,500 EUR, and humane euthanasia is often eventually required.
