Cerebellar Cortical Degeneration · CCD · Hereditary Ataxia · Cerebellar Ataxia · Kleinhirndegeneration · Gordon Setter Cerebellar Ataxia
This is an inherited neurological disorder where nerve cells in the cerebellum, the part of the brain responsible for coordinating movement, prematurely break down and die. In Gordon Setters, this degeneration is linked to a specific genetic mutation and is inherited in an autosomal-recessive manner, meaning a puppy must inherit the gene from both parents to be affected.
Owners typically notice symptoms between a few months and four years of age, starting with an unsteady, clumsy gait and a loss of balance. Over time, these signs progress to noticeable tremors, difficulty standing, and a lack of coordination during normal activities.
There is no cure for this progressive condition, and supportive care is aimed at maintaining comfort. Managing the disease and associated veterinary evaluations typically costs between 500 and 2000 EUR, though humane euthanasia is often considered as quality of life declines.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
