This is an inherited neurological condition where the cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls balance and coordination, fails to develop fully. It is caused by a genetic mutation that disrupts normal brain development during gestation. Because of this underdevelopment, the dog's nervous system cannot properly coordinate voluntary movements.
Symptoms usually become noticeable when puppies start walking, typically between 3 and 6 weeks of age. Owners will observe a wobbly or uncoordinated gait, frequent loss of balance, and head tremors, though these signs generally do not worsen as the dog grows.
There is no cure for this condition, but because it is non-progressive, affected dogs can live a comfortable life with lifelong supportive care and home modifications. Managing these special needs and ensuring a safe environment typically involves lifetime costs ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
