Question 1

What are the key physical and temperamental traits of water and coastal dogs?

Accepted Answer

Water and coastal dogs, like the Field Spaniel or the Kleine Münsterländer, are naturally drawn to the water. Physically, many of these breeds have a dense, often water-resistant double coat that protects them from getting chilled. Some breeds also have prominent webbed toes, making them excellent swimmers. Temperamentally, they're usually highly active, eager to learn, and have great stamina, as many were originally bred for hunting in marshlands or along coastlines. Because of their high energy levels, they make ideal companions for active people who love spending time by the sea or lakes. A practical tip: make sure to dry and air out their coat thoroughly after a swim to prevent skin irritation under that dense undercoat.

Question 2

What should I keep in mind when grooming my dog if they regularly play in salt water and sand?

Accepted Answer

Grooming after a day at the coast is essential for breeds like the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel or the German Spitz. Salt water can dry out the skin and make the coat brittle, while sand trapped in the undercoat acts like sandpaper, causing irritation. Thoroughly rinse your dog with clean fresh water after every trip to the beach to remove all salt residue. Pay close attention to the spaces between their paw pads and their armpits. For long-haired breeds, use a soft brush once the coat is dry to gently loosen any remaining sand and small tangles. A great tip: a dab of coconut oil on the paw pads protects them from the drying effects of salt and keeps the skin supple.

Question 3

Are all coastal dogs like the Australian Kelpie or the Field Spaniel automatically good swimmers?

Accepted Answer

Even though breeds like the Australian Kelpie or the Field Spaniel are highly athletic and love the water, not every dog is automatically a natural-born lifeguard. The ability to swim often needs to be learned and built up through play. Especially with young dogs or breeds like the Pharaoh Hound—which is known for dry environments but can still love the coast—getting used to deep water should be done gently. Start by using shallow shorelines. An important safety tip for coastal visitors: strong currents and waves can overwhelm even experienced swimmers. A well-fitting dog life jacket provides extra safety, increases visibility in the water, and helps your dog maintain the correct swimming position, which is especially useful during longer fetch games in the sea.

Question 4

What specific health risks should I look out for when taking my dog to coastal areas?

Accepted Answer

Dogs that spend a lot of time by the water are more susceptible to certain conditions, such as 'limber tail' (acute caudal myopathy). This is a painful paralysis of the tail base that often occurs after swimming in cold water or from overexertion. Make sure to dry your dog off thoroughly and keep them warm after swimming. Additionally, floppy ears—like those of the Kleine Münsterländer—can quickly develop infections due to moisture and warmth trapped in the ear canal. Gently clean and dry your dog's ears after every swim. Drinking saltwater is another major risk that can lead to severe vomiting and dehydration. Always carry plenty of fresh drinking water so your dog isn't tempted to drink from the sea.

Question 5

How do I find the right breeder for a water-loving breed like the Elo or Berger des Pyrénées?

Accepted Answer

When looking for a breeder for water-loving breeds like the Elo or Berger des Pyrénées, you should focus on transparency and health screening. A reputable breeder will openly discuss breed-specific hereditary diseases and provide proof of the parents' hip (HD) and elbow (ED) evaluations, which are particularly crucial for active breeds. Ask specifically whether the puppies have already been introduced to different surfaces and, ideally, water during their socialization phase. A good breeder ensures that their dogs are kept physically and mentally active. Visit the kennel in person to get a firsthand look at how the puppies are socialized, and make sure the breeder is a member of a recognized breed club, which helps ensure a certain standard of breeding practice.
