Der Lakeland Terrier stammt aus Cumberland, der nordwestlichsten, hoch gelegenen, kahlen und seenreichen Grafschaft Englands. In dem zerklüfteten Hochland Cumberlands und der benachbarten Grafschaften befanden sich die Jagdgründe des Lakeland. Gezüchtet aus dem "Old English Black and Tan Terrier", wurden der Bedlington zur Verbesserung des Wesens sowie der Border wegen seines drahtigen, Wasser abweisenden Haares eingekreuzt. Der mit viel Selbstvertrauen ausgestattete Lakeland hat ein unkompliziertes, fröhliches Wesen, das ihn zu einem sehr guten Familienhund macht. Unternehmungslustig und ausdauernd, furchtlos in seinem Auftreten, eignet er sich sehr gut als aufmerksamer Wächter. Schwierigkeiten können beim Zusammentreffen mit anderen Hunden entstehen. Bei konsequenter Erziehung ist der Lakeland jedoch ein bewegungsfreudiger, temperamentvoller Begleiter, der sich als Spielkamerad für Kinder bestens eignet.
