Senataxin-associated ataxia · SETX cerebellar ataxia · Spinocerebellar ataxia SETX-type · SETX-related progressive abnormal gait
This is an inherited neurological disorder affecting the nervous system, caused by a genetic mutation in the SETX gene. This defect leads to the progressive breakdown of nerve cells that are responsible for controlling and coordinating voluntary movements. As these cells degenerate, the brain loses its ability to properly communicate with the muscles.
Owners typically notice symptoms in puppies or young adults, starting with an unsteady, wobbly gait and difficulty balancing. Over time, these coordination issues worsen and may be accompanied by visible muscle tremors.
There is no cure for this progressive condition, and treatment is limited to supportive care to maintain quality of life. Managing symptoms and obtaining diagnostic confirmation typically costs between 500 and 2500 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
