This is a hereditary systemic inflammatory disorder where the dog's innate immune system mistakenly triggers inflammation without an actual infection. It primarily affects multiple organs and tissues, particularly the skin, joints, and kidneys, due to a genetic mutation linked to the breed's characteristic wrinkled skin. Over time, this chronic inflammation can cause a harmful buildup of proteins in vital organs like the kidneys.
Symptoms usually first appear before the age of two, presenting as sudden, recurring bouts of high fever and painful joint swelling, particularly in the hocks. Owners may also notice that the dog's muzzle becomes swollen and sensitive to the touch.
The disease is incurable and requires lifelong daily medication to manage inflammation and prevent organ damage. Regular veterinary checkups and bloodwork are necessary, with lifetime treatment costs typically ranging from €3,000 to €12,000.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
