PIGN-related paroxysmal dyskinesia(PxD)
Also known as: Paroxysmale Dyskinesie (PIGN) · PIGN-PD · Paroxysmal dyskinesia Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier · PIGN-associated dyskinesia · Wheaten Paroxysmal Dyskinesia · …
Overview
What it is
Wheaten Paroxysmal Dyskinesia (WPxD) is an inherited neurological disorder affecting the brain's ability to control voluntary muscle movements. It is caused by a genetic mutation in the PIGN gene, which temporarily disrupts normal nerve signaling in the brain during an episode. Between these sudden episodes of involuntary movement, the dog's brain functions normally and they show no signs of illness.
How it presents
Owners will typically notice sudden episodes of muscle cramping, tremors, or uncoordinated movements starting in young adulthood. During these episodes, which can last from minutes to hours, the dog remains fully conscious and aware of its surroundings.
Treatment
While there is no cure, the frequency of episodes can often be managed through stress reduction and specific medications. This lifelong management typically costs between 1,000 and 4,000 EUR for ongoing veterinary care and medications.
