Congenital Hypomyelinating Polyneuropathy, MPZ-related · HPN-MPZ · HPN
This is an inherited disorder of the nervous system caused by a genetic defect that prevents the proper formation of myelin, which is the protective insulating sheath around nerve fibers. Without this insulation, the nerves cannot properly transmit electrical signals from the brain to the muscles.
Symptoms typically appear in early puppyhood, starting around eight weeks of age. Owners will notice progressive muscle weakness, tremors, and coordination difficulties that worsen rapidly.
There is no cure for this progressive condition, and supportive care is aimed at maintaining comfort. Diagnostic and palliative care costs typically range from 500 to 2500 EUR, though the severity of the disease often leads to early euthanasia.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
