Meningoencephalitis is a severe inflammatory condition affecting the brain and its protective outer membranes, known as the meninges. In dogs, this is most commonly caused by an abnormal immune system response where the body mistakenly attacks its own central nervous system tissue. Diagnosis typically relies on advanced imaging like an MRI and analysis of the cerebrospinal fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
Owners may notice sudden neurological changes, including seizures, uncoordinated walking, a tilted head, or extreme neck pain and sensitivity to touch. These symptoms most frequently emerge in young to middle-aged dogs.
While the condition is treatable, it typically requires rapid intervention and lifelong immunosuppressive medication to manage the inflammation. Diagnostic and treatment costs generally range from €3,000 to €15,000.
