Pectinate ligament dysplasia is an inherited eye condition where the tiny, comb-like tissue fibers in the drainage angle of the eye do not develop normally. This malformation restricts the natural outflow of fluid from the eye, causing fluid to build up. Over time, this buildup can lead to a dangerous increase in pressure within the eye, a condition known as glaucoma.
While the underlying malformation is present from birth, symptoms typically do not appear until middle age. Owners may notice signs of severe eye pain, such as squinting, alongside red, watery, or cloudy eyes and sudden vision loss.
The underlying malformation cannot be cured, but if glaucoma develops, it requires lifelong management with daily eye drops or surgery to control pressure and relieve pain. This ongoing care typically costs between 1,000 and 5,000 EUR.
