This is a developmental malformation of the nervous system where cerebrospinal fluid, the protective fluid surrounding the brain and spine, builds up within the membranes of the spinal cord. This accumulation forms a fluid-filled sac, or cyst, that puts physical pressure on the spinal cord. This pressure disrupts the normal transmission of nerve signals between the brain and the rest of the body.
Owners typically notice a progressive, wobbly gait and weakness in the hind legs, usually appearing between one and five years of age. Some dogs may also show signs of back pain, and symptoms can gradually worsen to paralysis.
Depending on the severity, the condition can be managed with supportive medication or resolved through a one-time neurosurgical procedure. Diagnostic MRI scans and specialized spinal surgery typically cost between €2,000 and €7,500.
